Start at least 8 weeks before your intended travel date. The Acceptance Letter — the central document for Golf DTV — is your longest lead-time item, often taking 2–4 weeks to obtain. Plan backward from there, and the rest of the process fits naturally.

This article covers the four stages of Golf DTV from initial research through post-arrival life.

The Four Stages at a Glance

Stage What Happens When to Start
① Research and planning Understand the program, assess fit, decide on support service 2–3 months before travel
② Document preparation Obtain Acceptance Letter, prepare bank documents 6–8 weeks before travel
③ Embassy application Submit via Thai e-Visa or in person at Thai embassy 3–4 weeks before travel
④ After arrival Enter Thailand, begin activities, manage stay limits Ongoing from entry

Stage ①: Research and Planning

Before anything else, confirm three things:

Your bank balance. You'll need at least THB 500,000 (approximately USD 14,000–15,000) in an account, documented with an English-language bank balance certificate. This is a requirement, not a cost — the money stays yours.

Your fit with Golf DTV. If you haven't already, Is Golf DTV Right for You? covers the key indicators.

Whether to use a support service. The Acceptance Letter requires contacting a Thai golf facility in English. Some applicants do this independently; others use a Golf DTV specialist who maintains relationships with facilities and can ensure the letter meets embassy requirements. See Golf DTV support options.

Stage ②: Document Preparation (6–8 Weeks Out)

The Acceptance Letter — Start Here First

The Acceptance Letter is your most time-sensitive document. It's issued by a Thai golf course or facility and serves as the evidence of your qualifying activity. The process:

  1. Contact the facility (or your support service)
  2. Complete any required enrollment or payment
  3. Facility issues the letter (typically within a few days to one week after payment)
  4. Receive, review, and confirm the letter content

What the letter must contain: Your full name as it appears in your passport, the facility name and contact details, the purpose and duration of the visit, and an authorized signature. A letter that's missing any of these elements may cause issues at the embassy. See Golf DTV Documents for the full checklist.

Allow 2–4 weeks from initiating contact to receiving a usable letter. Start this process before anything else.

Other Documents to Prepare

Once you have a confirmed timeline for the Acceptance Letter, prepare these in parallel:

Document Notes
Passport Valid for at least 1 year (2+ recommended); blank pages available
English bank balance certificate Shows THB 500,000+; typically takes several business days to issue
Bank transaction statements (last 3 months) Required by many embassies; prepare from the same account as the balance certificate
Passport-style photo Match the format specified by the Thai e-Visa portal

On bank statements: A growing number of Thai embassies request 3 months of transaction history alongside the balance certificate. Prepare these proactively. A stable balance history is more credible than a large deposit made just before application. See Golf DTV Documents for full document guidance.

Stage ③: Embassy Application (3–4 Weeks Out)

How to Submit

DTV applications are submitted at a Thai embassy or consulate outside Thailand. Depending on which embassy you use:

  • Thai e-Visa portal: Online submission available at many embassies — the most common route for DTV applicants
  • In-person submission: Some embassies require or prefer this

Check the specific embassy you plan to use for current submission methods before preparing your documents. Requirements and accepted submission formats can vary.

On embassy variation: Processing formats, interview requirements, and document preferences can differ between embassies and change over time. This article describes the general process — confirm specifics with your intended embassy in advance.

Application Fee

THB 10,000, payable at the time of application. Some nationalities are exempt — see DTV Application Fee by Nationality.

Processing Time

Embassy processing typically takes 1–3 weeks after all documents are submitted. This varies by embassy, time of year, and application volume. Plan your travel dates around receiving the approval — don't book flights until you have confirmation.

Approval notification: When approved, you'll receive a DTV approval PDF by email. Once you have it, you can enter Thailand at any point within the 5-year validity window.

Stage ④: After Arrival

Entry

Present your passport at Thai immigration. Your DTV allows a stay of up to 180 days per entry. Your permitted stay is stamped in your passport at entry.

Two Ongoing Rules to Track

180-day limit. Each entry gives you up to 180 days. If you want to continue beyond that, exit Thailand and re-enter — your 180-day clock resets. Overstaying has serious consequences including fines and future entry restrictions.

90-day report. If you stay continuously in Thailand for 90 days or more, you must file a report with the nearest immigration office. This is a standard long-stay requirement.

Starting Golf Activities

Visit the golf facility that issued your Acceptance Letter, and explore courses across Thailand. Maintaining some actual engagement with golf — the stated basis for your visa — is advisable, particularly if you plan to reapply in the future.

FAQ

How long does Golf DTV take to get? Plan for 6–8 weeks from starting document preparation to visa approval. The Acceptance Letter is the longest single step (2–4 weeks). Embassy processing adds 1–3 weeks.

Can I book my flights before my visa is approved? We recommend against it. Book after you receive the approval PDF to avoid rebooking fees if processing takes longer than expected.

What if I need to travel sooner than 6 weeks away? The timeline may be tight. Contact a Golf DTV support service to discuss what's realistic for your specific situation.

Can I apply at any Thai embassy, or only in my home country? DTV can technically be applied for at any Thai embassy outside Thailand, but some embassies restrict applications to people legally present in their jurisdiction. Verify with the specific embassy you plan to use. See Where to Apply for DTV for more.
