"My application didn't go through and I'm not sure why." This is one of the most common concerns DTV applicants face. This article walks through the most frequently reported problem areas — not to alarm, but to help you identify and address issues before they cause delays.
The Four Root Causes
| Category | What Goes Wrong |
|---|---|
| Document deficiency | Required documents are missing or don't meet the stated requirements |
| Internal inconsistency | Information across different documents doesn't match |
| Unclear activity basis | The reason for applying isn't clearly established through documents |
| Application situation mismatch | The applicant's current location or status doesn't align with the embassy's rules |
1. Document Deficiency
The most straightforward cause. Even when applicants believe their documents are complete, specific requirements are often missed.
Common examples:
- Bank balance certificate is not in English, or was issued more than 3 months ago
- Bank transaction statements weren't prepared (an increasing number of embassies request these)
- Acceptance letter (Soft Power route) doesn't meet the embassy's format requirements
- Passport has less than 1 year of validity remaining
See the full DTV required documents checklist for a complete list of requirements.
2. Internal Inconsistency
Documents can all be present and yet still fail — if the information across them doesn't match.
Common examples:
- Passport name spelling doesn't match the bank balance certificate or acceptance letter
- The occupation stated in the application form contradicts the nature of the submitted contract
- The intended stay period in the form differs significantly from the acceptance letter dates
- Bank balance certificate and transaction statements are from different accounts
For a thorough review of common document mistakes, see DTV common document mistakes.
3. Unclear Activity Basis
For the Workcation route, the documents need to demonstrate that you actually work remotely for a non-Thai employer or client. For the Soft Power route, the acceptance letter needs to clearly establish the activity.
Common examples:
- Freelance applicants can't clearly explain their client relationship through documents
- Acceptance letter is vague about the activity content, duration, or the facility's details
- Application form narrative and attached documents don't form a coherent story
4. Application Situation Mismatch
The DTV requires that you are lawfully present in the jurisdiction of the embassy you're applying to. Problems here are less about documents and more about where you are and how.
Common examples:
- Applied at a third-country embassy that does not accept applications from people in that applicant's situation (e.g., on a tourist visa)
- The "document indicating current location" didn't meet that embassy's specific requirements
See Where to Apply for the DTV for guidance on embassy selection.
Post-Submission: Additional Document Requests (Increasingly Common for Soft Power)
For Soft Power route applicants in particular, receiving a request for additional documents during the review process has become more common. This is not a rejection — it's a request for clarification.
Check your email regularly after applying. Communications from the embassy arrive by email, and missing them can cause your application to stall. Also check your spam folder.
Common additional document requests:
- All passport visa stamp pages — the embassy may request photos of every stamped page in your passport to verify travel history
- 3 months of bank transaction statements — even if you submitted them initially, you may be asked again. This is increasingly common as a countermeasure to temporary balance inflation (depositing a large sum just before applying)
Online interviews: Some embassies schedule a video call as part of the Soft Power review. The date and time are typically set by the embassy — not chosen by the applicant. Be prepared to be available on short notice after submitting.
Pre-Reapplication Checklist
If your application was rejected or sent back, work through these checks before reapplying.
Document review:
- All names across all documents match the passport (exact spelling, exact order)
- Bank balance certificate: English, 500,000 THB+, issued within 3 months of application date
- Bank transaction statements from the same account as the balance certificate
- Acceptance letter (Soft Power): specific activity content, dates, facility name and contact all present
- Application form is consistent with all attached documents
Timing:
- Did you reissue expired documents? (Balance certificate, acceptance letter)
- Are you building in enough time for review — not applying right before your planned travel date?
Application situation:
- Did you confirm that the embassy you're applying to accepts applications in your situation?
- Does your current location document match that embassy's requirements?
Before You Reapply
Reapplying without identifying the root cause is likely to produce the same result. If the rejection notice includes a reason, address it specifically. If the reason isn't clear, work through the checklist above before submitting again.
