The Thai e-Visa portal processes DTV applications entirely online. Most fields are self-explanatory, but several consistently cause confusion. This guide focuses on those specific fields and how to approach them. Note that form interfaces can change — always refer to the current official screens as your primary reference.
For a complete walkthrough of the entire form structure, see the e-Visa form guide.
Fields That Commonly Cause Confusion
| Field | Common Question |
|---|---|
| Visa type / purpose | Soft Power or Workcation — which one? |
| Embassy / consulate selection | Which location should I choose? |
| Document indicating current location | What counts as proof of where I am now? |
| Occupation | What do freelancers, retirees, or unemployed applicants write? |
| Accommodation in Thailand | What if I haven't booked anything yet? |
| Intended entry date | Does this lock me into a specific date? |
1. Visa Type / Purpose
The DTV has two main routes:
- Workcation — your basis is remote work for an employer or client outside Thailand
- Soft Power — your basis is participation in a Thai cultural activity (golf, cooking, martial arts, etc.)
Select the route that matches the supporting document you're submitting. If you're applying with an employment contract or freelance agreement, choose Workcation. If you're applying with an acceptance letter from a Thai facility, choose Soft Power. You can only select one.
2. Embassy / Consulate Selection
The form may ask you to select your application embassy or consulate.
General rule:
- If you're currently residing in your home country, select the Thai embassy or consulate that covers your region
- If you're applying while staying in a third country, select the Thai mission in that country — but confirm in advance that they accept applications from people in your situation
See Where to Apply for the DTV for more on embassy selection and third-country applications.
3. Document Indicating Current Location
This field is frequently misunderstood. It is not asking for proof of your home address — it's asking for proof that you are lawfully present in the jurisdiction of the embassy you're applying to at the time of application.
| Situation | Typical acceptable documents |
|---|---|
| Applying in your home country | Driver's license, utility bill, resident registration |
| Applying from a third country | Valid visa for that country + hotel receipt, or onward flight to Thailand |
Requirements can vary by embassy. Confirm what's accepted before you apply.
4. Occupation
This field asks for your current employment status. Common situations:
| Situation | How to approach it |
|---|---|
| Employee | Enter your current job title or industry |
| Freelancer | "Freelancer" or a descriptive title (e.g. "Freelance Graphic Designer") |
| Self-employed | "Self-employed" + business type |
| Retired / early retired | "Retired" or previous occupation. For Soft Power applicants, the occupation field alone doesn't establish your basis — your acceptance letter does. |
| Not currently working | Enter your actual situation honestly. Your application basis comes from supporting documents, not occupation. |
What you write in the occupation field should not contradict the supporting documents you attach.
5. Accommodation in Thailand
If you haven't confirmed where you'll stay, this field can feel tricky.
- If you have a confirmed booking, enter those details
- If accommodation is not yet confirmed, follow the guidance provided by your specific embassy (how to handle "undecided" varies)
- Some applicants enter a well-known hotel in their target area as a placeholder — but note that if the stated address significantly differs from your actual plans, this could raise questions
6. Intended Entry Date
Most DTV applicants worry that entering a date here locks them in. In practice:
- This date is generally treated as an estimate of when you plan to travel
- Once you receive your DTV approval PDF, you can enter Thailand at any time within the 5-year validity — there is no required entry date
- Entering a date very far in the future (e.g. more than 6 months out) may prompt follow-up from some embassies, but this is not universal
General Form Tips
- Match all English name fields exactly to your passport — name spelling, date of birth, passport number
- Save progress whenever the form allows — sessions can time out
- Review all fields before submitting — corrections after submission are difficult
